The Original Biker Gourmet

Great Places to Eat ...when you're on two wheels
Concept & Page Design Copyright ©2002-2008 DFW Freedom Riders

Welcome! This list of good "biker friendly' restaurants" has been compiled to help weary motorcyclists fill up their ever-expanding tummy's with good grub. This list is broken down a little differently. The restaurants are grouped by town, and also listed in the index in alphabetical order. To see all restaurants listed for Decatur, click on it, or click on the D to see all towns that begin with that letter. You can also find any restaurant by name in the alphabetical listing and go directly to it. Only those with written critiques are listed in the right two columns, there may be restaurants listed in the town with just name and address. Out of state restaurants are listed by city only.

Hope you find it useful, fun and easier to use. If you have a destination or route, then just find any restaurants in towns in that area.

Let's grow (128 and growing) and update the list. Bikers, please e-mail your current critiques of these and other restaurants to us and we'll add your comments and listings. Also let us know if any of these are no longer in business so we can keep it current. Keep mind that situations and owners change on these restaurants, and a good revue doesn't guarantee quality when you go.

ACTON

PAMS TOO CAFE
5320 Acton Highway (South on Highway 4 out of Granbury just west of Hwy 167)
Acton, Texas
(817) 326-4056
A recent breakfast ride led us to return to Pams Too in Acton, just south of Granbury. Parking is paved with some shade. The food was plentiful and reasonable. Breakfast for 2 was around $12.00 and we had plenty. Standard breakfast fair with giant pancakes. The cafe is very biker friendly and the food was excellent. While we were there five more bikers came in at different times. Highly recommended breakfast stop. It is a fairly small place but they accomodated 13 of us with no problem. Recommend calling ahead if you have a large group.

ADDISON

ALBANY

FORT GRIFFIN GENERAL MERCHANDISE
Formerly the Bee Hive
Albany, Texas
About 1/2 mile from downtown Albany going toward Abilene on the south side of the road.
325-762-3034
Albany may be a bit too far for a casual bike ride from the "MetroMess," but this restaurant needs to be on any good restaurant list. Open for lunch, but if you like shrimp (Thursdays) or steak (Friday and Saturdays), this is one of the best. All the shrimp you can eat, fried and boiled, for about $20. They keep bringing it until you explode, and it is excellent!! You need to be at the restaurant right at 6:00pm unless you want to wait forever to eat!!
Received information February 2005 that the restaurant formerly known as the Bee Hive is now the Fort Griffin General Merchandise store. They do still have a restaurant, but it is unknown if the information on the quality of food, etc is still correct.

ALVORD

HOT SKILLET (EXXON TRUCK STOP)
Highway 287 North (2 miles north on west side of highway)
Alvord
, Texas
This turned out to be one of those rare treats in restaurants. Truck stop food is normally plentiful, but sometimes on the "greasy spoon" order. The Hot Skillet, located on Highway 287/81 about 2 miles north of Alvord, Texas has a varied menu ranging from Chicken Fried Steak to Quesadillas. The Chicken Fried Steak was HUGE and very tasty. The breading was a little thick, but the steak was plentiful and tender. A member of our party said the Quesadillas were some of the best she had ever eaten. Another trip back there for breakfast turned out to be just as good. The breakfasts are large, tasty and reasonably priced. Give this place a try and you will like it.

ARLINGTON

AL'S HAMBURGERS
North Collins at Green Oaks
Big Al's Hamburgers has been an Arlington tradition since 1957. Originally located on 157 near Washington, Al's relocated to it's current site at the northeast corner of Highway 157 (Collins) and Green Oaks Blvd about 20 years ago. The burgers are as good as ever and as of 2005, they are opening for breakfast on the weekends. Try Al's out, you won't be disappointed.

AURORA

TATER JUNCTION
Aurora, Texas
Located on Highway 114 about three miles west of Rome, Tater Junction is a favorite stop for good grub at reasonable prices. They offer a variety of foods from Chicken Fried Steak to Catfish and are open for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner seven days a week. Their parking lot is gravel, but it is hard packed and easy to maneuver.

B

BLUE RIDGE

CATTLEMEN'S CAFE
Blue Ridge, Texas
The Cattleman’s Café in downtown Blue Ridge has a great old fashion breakfast and hand breaded chicken fried steak with fresh vegetables. Blue Ridge is just north of Farmerville off S.H. 78 & F.M. 545. The ride is nice and you can visit the Blue Ridge Outpost. It offers a variety of biker clothing and accessories at discount prices.

BLUM

BIG BIRTHA'S BURGERS AND MORE
Blum, Texas
Located in the middle of Blum on FM67, Birtha's Burgers is a favorite stop south of Cleburne. The burgers are large, tasty and very reasonably priced. It is located in a converted double wide trailer in "downtown" Blum. The parking area is gravel, but is hard packed and manageable in dry weather..

BOWIE

JIM BOWIE RESTAURANT
Highway 287 & Highway 59
Bowie, Texas
As good as it was, the Jim Bowie Restaurant is no longer. The restaurant burned in January 2008 and will probably not reopen. Updated Summer 2008.

ARMADILLO GRILL
Highway 287 & FM174 (North End of Bowie)
Bowie, Texas
I have been passing this place for a couple of years and threatening to stop in one day and try it. After checking with a local resident of Bowie, I decided to give it a try on a Saturday ride. This is a fairly new restaurant attached to the truck stop located on Hwy 287 at FM 174 just on the northern end of Bowie. The parking lot is paved and large enough to handle a group of bikes. Even with a group of 20+, we were seated in a timely manner. The menus provided a very large variety of everything from burgers to chicken fried steak to breakfast served any time. Their prices were reasonable. Service was pretty good, considering the size of the group. The food was prepared in a reasonable amount of time and almost to a person the group was very pleased with the quality. I would recommend giving the Armadillo Grill a try if you are in the area. BRIDGEPORT

YESTERDAY'S TEXAS BRIDGEPORT
Highway 380 Bypass just east of Hwy 101
Bridgeport, Texas
(940) 683-6620

This is an extension of one of the greatest places in Decatur. It is a brand new facility located on the 380 bypass just east of Hwy 101 in Bridgeport. They have ample room for larger groups and the parking lot is very biker friendly.

The best part of this restaurant is the food. They serve some of the tastiest, most mouth watering, old fashioned hamburgers I have tried in a while. They range in price from the Classic Burger at $2.59 to the 'Superman' double cheeseburger for $4.39. My personal favorite is their chili cheeseburger with a basket of fries. They also offer a large variety of other foods, such as chicken fried steak, chicken, quesadilas, salads, grilled foods and vegetable plates.

The ultimate can be saved for last, or if you live by the Chinese philosophy of 'Life is short, eat dessert first', you can order it first. For $2.89 you can have a scrumptious slice of homemade apple pie with a dollop of ice cream on top, served in a small, sizzling hot, cast iron skillet.

Their hours of operation are from 11:00am to 8:30pm, Monday through Thursday and until 9:00pm on Fridays, and then from 11:00am until 2:00pm on Sundays. It would be a great place to stop on a Saturday all day ride.

BROWNWOOD

UNDERWOOD'S CAFETERIA
Brownwood, Texas
Coming into town from Ft Worth (On 67, I think) at the traffic circle, bear to the right. It will be on the left about 4 blocks.
Tel: 915-646-1776
Not true West Texas BBQ, but still very good. Also have chicken fried steak, fried chicken, sausage, ribs; all are excellent. It's crowded on the weekends. Plan for an early or late lunch and hope that a tour bus has not stopped.

C

CANTON

DAIRY PALACE
Hwy. 19 at I-20
Canton, Texas 75103
(903) 567-6551
The Dairy Palace in Canton is a favorite stop when traveling east on I-20 from Dallas. Located about an hour east of Dallas, Canton is the home of the famous "First Monday" flea market. It is also home to "World Famous" burgers from the Dairy Palace. The burgers are tasty, relatively inexpensive, and plentiful. They even offer a "Buffalo Burger" which has a very good flavor. The meat is leaner than beef and slightly drier. The service is usually pretty fast, even when they are very crowded. They are open 24/7. Give the Dairy Palace a try for breakfast, lunch or dinner some time, you won't be disappointed.

CARLOS

YANKEE BAR & GRILL
Yankee Bar & Grill
Carlos, TX.
Great Motorcycle Place for lunch.  Be prepared to wait about an hour at peak times.  Outstanding Hamburgers, beer and softdrinks. This place is about 18 miles east of College Station/Bryan, TX.

This is a popular ride with locals from miles around. Yankee's Tavern is a well known meeting place for riders in the area. Located at the north end of the loop it is connected to Fat Matt's Firehouse, another meeting place, on the south by some twisty road, forests and small communities with rich Texas history. There are a few very sharp turns at the end of long straight aways. Signs can be removed by other than the highway folks, so be aware. This is a highly used route and you will enjoy meeting many other riders. I have thrown in some extra Farm-to-Market roads for you to explore. Things to watch for are exotic animals, beautiful scenery, private raceways, and an old Courthouse.

CEDAR HILL

SAM'S PASTA & PIZZA
601 Cedar Street
Cedar Hill, Texas 75104
(972) 293-0013
Sam's Pasta and Pizza is one of those out of the way places that's well worth visiting. They offer a variety of Italian style food, including spaghetti, Manicotti, Lasagna, as well as pizza. The prices are very reasonable, with dinner entrees ranging from $5.95 to $9.95. Sam's is located at the corner of Cedar and Houston Streets, just one block south of Belt Line Road.

POUNDERS BURGER BAR (FORMERLY OPEN DOOR GRILL)
218 West Walnut Street
Celina, Texas 75009
972-382-1133
Located on the square in downtown Celina. The Open Door in Celina, TX has changed it's name and concept. It is now called: POUNDERS BURGER BAR. The (same) owners added a bar and created a new menu. All items on menu are sold in increments of pounds and nothing comes with nothing! It is very a cool concept and very inexpensive.

From Andrew Byers, "The Open Door in Celina, Tx is a great two wheels stop!"

Take Hwy. 67 south through downtown Cleburne, then about 2-1/2 miles. It's on the left just past Kroger. One motorcyclist writes the "Biker Gourmet" and declares, "A buffet to die for!!" Hours: 11:00-9:00 Sun-Thur; 11:00-10:00 Fri-Sat.

COLLINSVILLE

COLLINSVILLE CAFE (Formerly Main Street Cafe)
106 N. Main Street
Collinsville
903-429-3125
Recommended by fellow bikers as having "great food".

A breakfast ride to the area on 8/18/07 led to a stop in downtown Collinsville at the Main Street Cafe. Well, it has now changed to the Two Sisters Cafe. It has been remodeled slightly and the food, while good before, seems to be much better now. I highly recommend giving this place a try.
Updated 8/20/2007.

Episode 3 - Received information that the name has changed again and is now the Collinsville Cafe.
New owners, good food, good attitude toward 2-wheelers, plenty of food, and price is right.  Cycle parking is also a plus.  Our Saturday morning group puts this in the same category as Lucy's (Celina), Cattleman's (Blue Ridge), and Circle V (121 toward Bonham)  Currently one of the few places who not only put it on the menu but also know what and how to make a fried baloney sandwich.  This from an east coast transplant, fried baloney sandwich expert in our group. Worth the stop if you are in the area. Dale E. Dunning (8/11/2008)

CRANDALL

COTTON GIN
Highway 175 at FM 148
Crandall, Texas
972-427-3883
On Highway 175 in Crandall, between Dallas and Kaufman, the Cotton Gin is raved about for their breakfasts and lunches. The food is great and the prices reasonable. On the five occasions we have eaten there, the food has been great and the service good. They are closed on Mondays.

CROWLEY

HOGAN'S COFFEE SHOP & DELI
800 N. Crowley Road at FM 1187
Crowley, Texas
817-297-1755
This place feels as homey and friendly as the little town. The front half is a parlor filled with antiques, magazines and games; the back half is a kitchen where Mrs. Hogan slices, dices and cooks while visiting with customers. The menu is short and sweet. Come early and you can try a fresh-made breakfast burrito: potato, egg and cheese or sausage, egg and cheese. The first is made with red-jacket spuds; the second holds just enough crumbled spiced sausage. Most sandwiches are $4.50. The veggie sandwich is a real winner; the roast beef is a standout with a heap of deli-sliced beef and lots of nutty Swiss cheese.

DALLAS

MARKET DINER (ORIGINAL)
4434 Harry Hines Blvd.
Dallas, Texas, Dallas
214-521-0992.
Tops the chart in Dallas home cooking. Professional reviewer Ed Bamberger rates it 5 Stars. He says, "Virtually everything I've eaten here is delicious, served hot and arrives in lightning speed. Prices are incredibly inexpensive -- downright cheap if you ask me -- and the daily specials are worth checking out. Check out the chicken and dumplings or the chicken pot pie. Their meat loaf can't be beat. Breakfast is always served. This place is NOT to be missed!"

BUTTERMILK CAFE AND MARKET
17604 Dallas Parkway
Dallas, Texas
972-267-2110.
The new Buttermilk Café and Market is tasty as mom’s apple pie and then some. This casual dining-make that home cookin’-restaurant is part of the III Forks empire just off Trinity Mills and Dallas North Tollway. It's a combination diner, gift shop and slice of Americana. It feels like a soda shop on one side with a lunch counter and big overstuffed booths. The dining room-on the other side-could be a roadside café in Smalltown, USA. The crowds are flocking here, because the food is stick to your ribs good. Expect a short wait during peak lunchtime, but the turnover is pretty quick. (Description supplied by KRLD's restaurant reviewer.)

DECATUR

CASA TORRES
Hwy 51 South
Decatur, Texas
About 1.5 miles south of 287, across from the fair grounds
This is a gem of a Mexican Restaurant we recently located. Their specialty is Fajitas, and the meat is some of the most tender we have tried. Their one drawback is the hard pack gravel parking lot, but after 5pm you can park in the paved lo at the rear of the office building just south of the restaurant and walk through a provided gate.

CATFISH O'HARLIES
Decatur, Texas
Just north of Decatur on the west side of Highway 287.

FRILLY'S SEAFOOD BAYOU KITCHEN
1803 South Highway 287
Decatur, Texas
940-626-1424

A gem of a new place in Decatur. Frilly's specializes in Cajun style food with crawfish, fish, Po'Boys, Oysters, Boudin and other entrees. The food has been very good the three times we have eaten there and the service good. Prices are medium range with Po'Boys ranging from $6.50 to 8.50 for Gator. They also have chicken fried steak, burgers and other standard fare..

MATTIE'S CAFE ON THE SQUARE
Mattie's is no longer in business. It has been replaced by Sweetie Pie's Ribeyes, which I can not recommend at all. This place only serves pan fried ribeye steaks with a baked potato and salad. There are no other choices and I wasn't overly impressed with quality and service. Steaks are fried in butter and had a very greasy taste.

YESTERDAY’S TEXAS
Highway 287 (next to K-Bob’s)
Decatur, Texas
(940) 627-5866

If you have been searching for that nostalgic place with good old fashioned hamburgers, then your quest is over. Located on the southbound side of the Highway 287 bypass in Decatur is Yesterday’s Texas. This is a step back to the 50’s, with that diner atmosphere, James Dean posters, sock hop memorabilia, an H-O Gauge train running around the top of the cafe, and other fun happenings. Yesterday’s Texas is owned by the same people who have the Texas Cafe on the old business 287 south of downtown Decatur.

Their hours of operation are from 11:00am to 8:30pm, Monday through Thursday and until 9:00pm on Fridays, and then from 11:00am until 2:00pm on Sundays. It would be a great place to stop on a Saturday all day ride. Their space is fairly small and they are always busy, so be patient with getting seated. It is well worth the wait.

E

EDOM

SHED CAFE
Edom, Texas
"Downtown Edom" at FM 279 & FM 314
903-852-7791.
The great tradition of East Texas food; yummy with plenty of rustic ambience. James Weaver calls it "Fabulous and a must stop on any East Texas tour." Absolutely home cooking. The neighborhood ladies come in on the weekends to cook. They have a chalk board with the pies listed - as they run out of one kind, they erase that one from the board; there are audible groans when they do. On Sunday's you best be there by 11:30 am before the church crowd invades or you won't get any pie, let alone a place to sit. Popular with the "Wingers," the Shed is about a 2-1/2 hour ride from DFW. You have to tolerate the nasty drive around Dallas but there are good country roads once you get into the piney woods.

FLOWER MOUND

CHRISTINA'S
Fm 1171 & Shiloh Rd
Flower Mound, Texas
817-430-3669
Tonight's (9/27) Club dinner ride took us to Christina's in Flower Mound. For a majority of the club, it was a first time. There are two other locations, one in Addison and the other in Lewisville. Christina's is strictly Tex-Mex. We called ahead and our table was waiting for us when we arrived. We had a large group and I think everyone tried a variety of dishes. The types of dishes are too many to list here, but personally I enjoyed the beef fajitas. The chips were warm and they serve two types of salsa. Your regular tomato and a green salsa that is supposed to have some bite to it. I have been to their restaurant in Lewisville and the margaritas there are very good. (I would only suggest this if you are in your 4-wheeler) For a large group, the service was pretty good and always on the spot with a refill. If you like Tex-Mex and want to try some place new, try Christina's. The ride to get there isn't too bad either. The hours are Sunday - Thursday 11:00AM to 9:00PM. Friday - Saturday 11:00AM to 10:00PM. Parking can be tight, but extra parking is available on the hill at the church. RATINGS: Food (9) Service (8) M/C Ambience (7)

MONTGOMERY STREET CAFE
Montgomery Street Café

Fort Worth, Texas

I can not say enough about this café. This is one of those places you have to go too. They only serve breakfast and lunch. Monday through Saturday. The food is excellent. Montgomery Street Café has been a staple of  Fort Worth since the late 40's. and is in the same building.  If you go you will probably have to stand in line but is well worth it. One becomes part of 'the family' when dining at this 'fine' establishment.  The food makes me feel like I'm at Grandma's house again. And I can never eat it all, just like at Grandma's."

If you are in the Fredricksburg area, we highly recommend the Fredricksburg Brewery in the downtown area. The food is excellent, the prices are reasonable, and if you are off the scooters, they even have some very good locally brewed ales. They were able to accomodate a group of 46 (with advance notice) on a Friday evening. The place looks small, but they do have the room.

STRINGFELLOW'S
Highway 377 & 51 on the square
Granbury, Texas
817-573-6262
The first thing that caught my attention was the décor. I would best describe it as almost elegant antique. Very nice romantic atmosphere, dark wood paneling, tweed cloth backed chairs, tablecloths on the tables and linen napkins. We were immediately greeted by the hostess, seated, and given one page menus. (I have a copy if anyone wants to see it.) Hint: Don't go looking for a hamburger or a sandwich! Wine is available with your meal just be prepared to show your drivers license to comply with the local alcohol law. Be fore warned the food prices are not cheap but not overly expensive either. You do get a good sized portion for the money About what you would expect to pay for a nice romantic date with your wife or significant other. For example I had the "Hand Cut Beef Rib Eye" with sautéed mushrooms for $21.95. The price included salad, roasted potatoes, vegetable du Jour (that means their choice - which happened to be a very good steamed broccoli), and fresh hot bread. Dena had the "Shrimp Ole" for $17.95 which consisted of lemon vermouth scampi served over herbed rice, with a side of fresh homemade guacamole. (I finished the guacamole she didn't eat and it was great!) When we finished eating we were stuffed but we couldn't resist trying the "White Chocolate Bread Pudding" with caramelized rum sauce, so we ordered one to share. That was either a good decision or a bad decision depending on how you look at. The bread pudding was some of the best we have ever had. After eating the pudding I was so full I was miserable and had serious doubts if I could get back on the bike to ride home. Somehow I managed. Needless to say we enjoyed our meal and had excellent service. We will surely go back. In fact if you decide to visit "Stringfellow's" let us know we just might go with you. If you go, do not plan on a breakfast or lunch because they are ONLY open evenings 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm, and are closed on Wednesdays. If you would like to make a reservation call 817-537-6262 and they will save you a table.

GRAND PRAIRIE

TON'S MONGOLIAN GRILL
4116 South Carrier Parkway
Grand Prairie, Texas
(972) 642-2298
11-9 Monday - Saturday

Oriental buffet with a twist. As you enter and are seated, the waitress will ask for your drink order and soup preference (hot and sour or egg drop), then the fun begins. The buffet line has 6 meats, beef, chicken, pork, lamb, fish and crab at lunch. They add shrimp for dinner, you choose your meat, and all or your favorites of several vegetables and noodles. All the ingredients at this point are raw, the meat has been frozen and shaved. After your bowls are full you get to the sauce line, directions are above and explain how to season your treat to your liking. Even with the directions it takes a few times to get used to it. You then proceed to the end where one of two chef's take your tray and bowls and cook your meal on a large wok. They can, and often do, cook 6-7 meals at a time. It is imperative you do not move from your place. Somehow the keep it all together and hand it to you as it is completed. Steamed rice is served with your meal and of course a plum sauce, soy sauce and some stuff in a clear squeeze jar that will set you on fire. You may go through the line as often as you like although I have never seen anyone go for seconds. After you finish, a small dish of ice cream is served.

Pricing is extremely moderate, 6.95 for lunch, 8.95 for dinner. Drinks are 1.00 extra. Water of course is free. Quiet atmosphere, very laid back. If you need 10 tables put together they will accommodate. Lots of parking. Well lit.

GRAPEVINE

WILHOITE'S
432 S. Main Street
Grapevine
817-481-2511
Housed in a former 1914 automotive garage on historic Grapevine's Main Street, Wilhoite's atmosphere is eclectic to say the least. The owner's have strived to leave the historical significance of the building alone, while still creating a casual dining atmosphere. Live bands entertain on the weekends, including country and rock, while karaoke nights are on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The lunch and dinner buffet is reasonably priced and includes a variety of home cooked foods like roast beef, shrimp and potatoes. Entrees can be ordered from the menu as well, such as a bacon-wrapped fillet mignon or a chicken club sandwich.

This is a favorite destination stop for area bikers, especially on weekend nights.

HALTOM CITY

BLUEBONNET CAFE
2223-A Haltom Road
Haltom City, TX 76117
(817) 834-4988
We have visited the Bluebonnet Cafe on two separate breakfast rides during the past couple of months and we have not been disappointed either time. Their motto is "Serving breakfast and lunch like mom used to make" and they fully live up to their motto.
Their breakfasts are large, tasty, and reasonably priced, just the way Freedom Riders like them. Prices range from a huge Bluebonnet Breakfast, which includes three eggs, with your choice of bacon or sausage, hash browns or grits, and homemade biscuits & gravy or toast for $4.75, to homemade sticky buns for a dollar. Their biscuits are huge and one could easily make a breakfast out of biscuits and gravy for $2.25. The service is fast and friendly and the coffee flows in a bottomless cup.Their decor alone is worth stopping by to see. As soon as you enter the cafe through the center dining room, you will notice it is decorated in all types of "I Love Lucy" memorabilia. The two side dining rooms are both decorated with all kinds of country crafts that you can spend your entire meal time looking over. The Bluebonnet Cafe is located on Haltom Road between Airport Freeway and Belknap Street. This is just a short ride for breakfast, but an excellent place to "fill up your belly tank" before a full day of riding.Ratings: Food (9) Service (8) Motorcycle Ambience (8)

HAMILTON

The special is a triple cheeseburger with your choice of fries or tots. The triple totals 1/2 pound {before cooking}. They also offer 1/4# burgers, shakes, chicken fingers etc. Fast excellent burgers. Very moderately priced at $4.59 for the special plus drink of your choice. As much seating as your average Mickie D's or What-A-Burger but much tastier. Parking is sufficient for several scooters and close enough for a lunch ride over some of our favorite southern roads.
All in all a worthwhile destination.

What a great cheeseburger! When time permits I bike from Dallas to Hawkins (about 2 hours one way from Dallas) just to get their cheeseburger and onion rings. There is just something different about East Texas beef! Service is spotty but food is great. They also offer blue plate specials every day. Recently had a change in ownership - but the quality of the food remains. I have been going to this place for the past 5 years. Used to own a lot at Holly Lake, now I just go out there for the food and riding the back roads. Tom Stewart

HILLSBORO

Old Brandon Road
This restaurant is located on Old Brandon Road, just off the southbound I-35 service road between the first and second exits in Hillsboro. We tried it for lunch on a Satuday ride in November 2006 and found it worth a return trip. The food was rated very good by all 17 people in our group. The prices were reasonable and they have all of the standard Tex Mex fare, plus a selection of "Gringo" food. It is highly recommended for lunch. The parking lot is good and it is easily accessible from I-35 at the first exit south of Hwy77.

Hours: Open until 10pm weeknights and 11pm on Saturdays
Second location is in Arlington (817-274-7242)
Angelo's is a quaint, out of the way location in the heart of the metroplex, serving; Pizza, Steaks, Chicken Pasta, Sandwiches,Salads, and of course Spaghetti. Their prices are extremely reasonable, with portions being 'just right'; not too big and not too small for most Freedom Riders' needs. Paved parking can be found all around the building with the best area for bike parking found in the rear (easy pull through parking). Many of Irving's finest (law enforcement officers) frequent Angelo's because of the great food, prices, portions, and atmosphere. Did I not mention the atmosphere? Well it is a smoking allowed establishment, BUT, the smoking area is to the front, and the non-smoking area is to the rear/back side (on separate ventilation equipment) with the kitchen in the middle. It is an older establishment, with a somewhat rustic décor; plenty of room to gather, and servers that work very hard, and do not have a problem dealing with 'rowdy' Freedom Riders. Service is always pleasant and quick. They even have Diet Doctor Pepper! Food: 8.5, Price:10, Biker ambiance: 9.5, Parking: 10  (Submitted by Kevin Vardaman)

HERD'S BURGERS
400 N. Main Street
Jacksboro, Texas
The world's best hamburger is still at Herd's Hamburgers. It's on your way from the courthouse out the road to Wichita Falls, or Henrietta. The present owner is the son of the founders: Jess and Mary Herd. They began the little one-room hamburger stand back in the '40s, or even maybe the late '30s, and it's been in operation ever since. Thousands of satisfied customers would agree that Herd's is the BEST anywhere! (Submitted by a non-biker)

BIKER REVIEW: The burgers are EXCELLENT! They don't serve fries, just burgers and chips. Also be aware that their inside seating space is VERY limited and their parking lot is gravel. It's well worth the stop, but it may be best to park in the church parking lot across the street. It's a great place for lunch on a mild day, but not one for bad weather conditions for outdoor seating.

LONE STAR BUFFET
500 Block S. Wheeler (US Hwy 96 just north of Hwy 190)
Jasper, Texas 75951
(409) 381-8688
Located on US 96 just a few blocks north of Hwy 190, the Lone Star Buffet was a great find on a recent trip to Jasper. The food was excellent, much better than most buffet style restaurants. The price was reasonable, $6.49 for lunch. The selection was outstanding, with a full salad bar, a second entree bar with fried & baked chicken, catfish, beef, liver & onions, mashed 'taters, and all the goodies, and a third pasta bar. Top it off with homemade pies and desserts.

This is what they say about their mission on their Web Site:
Welcome to Lone Star Buffet! At Lone Star Buffet, we believe the key to our success is to provide our customers with fresh and delicious food, a restaurant cleaner than any other and a friendly and welcoming staff. We have guests that drive from miles around to try our made from scratch homestyle cooking, our big and fresh salad bar and our many desserts. What they like best about Lone Star Buffet ... It's just like Grandma makes! People keep coming back to Lone Star Buffet for the traditional homestyle food made from scratch and served fresh. They also come back to Lone Star Buffet because we take great pride in treating people the way they ought to be treated. If Grandma ain't cooking, come to Lone Star Buffet!

ADDITIONAL REVIEW - 7/1/2007
My friends have been riding to the lakes in Jasper for years.  We always stop at the same places in Jasper to eat that have been there forever (usually that are not that special). After I read your listing I gave Lone Star Buffet a try.  Several things really set them apart.
The food is like something you would make on a Sunday at your own house for your own family. There is no other way to describe it.  I would eat at Lone Star Buffet every day if I lived in Jasper.  Another thing is that there is a cook - his name is Carl - I think he might really be the owner (he is on the website www.lonestarbuffet.com).  Even though they were packed, he was running around to bring my group extra hot rolls and make sure we were happy and taken care of.  You do not find that these days.  The place was very clean and comfortable and I just wish I had known about it years ago. Thanks for your listing and if any bikers are heading to Jasper Texas - Give this place a try.
Thanks,
Victor  - Beaumont Texas
